Module 4: Using the infosphere: Search Engine Task

1. Choose your most commonly used internet search engine and do a search with words of your choosing – record the first hit and number of hits in your learning log.
I chose Google and did 2 searches:-
search for Trojan remover;
Trojan Virus Scanner – PCTools.com - http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/?ref=google_au_trojans&gclid=COHOjan3_JsCFcIvpAod5hfJ-w
was the first hit recorded, Number of results – 5,990,000

Australian Bulldogs;
The Australian Bulldog Society INC. - www.australianbulldogsociety.com/
992,000 results – 1st hit recorded.

2. Using Copernic, set it up to search at least three search engines (including one to search the “deep web”) and repeat exactly the same search

search for Trojan remover
PCTools.com -
http://www.pctools.com/spyware-doctor/?ref=google_au_trojans&gclid=CIqEh9r3_JsCFdMtpAod1Vxz-g
1st hit recorded – number of recorded hits - 38

search for Australian Bulldogs;
37 results recorded;
1st hit – Dog Walking in Sydney –
http://www.homealone.com.au/
1st hit recorded – number of hits 37.
I used Clusty to complete my deep web search. I searched for Aussie bulldog, the listings recorded 1,300,000 results – the 1st listing was- Aussie Credit Card -
http://www.which4u.com.au/aussie?campaign=google&kw="aussie"&_s_ref=2E743Mr2S&creative=4308675273&gclid=CI_B8emF_ZsCFRUwpAodJByn_Q

The difference in search engines is - Google showed a larger amount of results than copernic, but copernic results were more concise and the results list was shorter as well as including % rates of each result. The deep web search using Clusty showed 1,300,000 results but included all results with the words either Aussie or bulldogs not very concise.

3. Save at least the first 5 from both searches.
Google - 5 searches:-
http://www.australianbulldogsociety.com/
http://www.unitedaussiebulldogassociation.com/
http://www.aussiebulldogs.com/
http://www.aussiebulldogs.com/
http://www.aussiebulldogclub.com/

Copernic - 5 searches:-
Dog Walking – Sydney -
http://www.homealone.com.au/
